Windex: Not Just For Cleaning Glass
For the next two articles, I’ve decided to educate readers on a few household cleaning products that have multiple uses. Let’s start with the popular household glass cleaner, Windex. Everyone knows what it’s sold for: cleaning glass and clear surfaces of stains and streaks. Did you know that Windex also is great for getting out liquid stains on fabric like sheets, clothes and those affordable sectional sofas we love so much? It even works on carpet! There is a method to using it, though, so listen carefully.
- First step is to make sure you have the right kind of Windex. Though you can use the blue Windex, it is better to get the clear bottle to avoid stains from the dye used in the blue Windex.
- Spray the Windex lightly on the fabric and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Don’t let it sit too long as the ammonia can bleach out the fabric if you do.
- Wash it (if clothes or sheets) or blot it dry (if carpet or sofa). Repeat until the stain is removed.
Three simple steps= no more stain! What makes it work so well? The ammonia in the Windex acts as a natural stain remover because it bleaches whatever you put it on. According to Wikipedia, Windex contains Household Ammonia, otherwise called ammonium hydroxide. Pure ammonia is actually very harmful to your body, which is why the household cleaning version contains added water and ranges in concentration from 5-10 percent of pure ammonia.
I can personally vouch for its effectiveness. My friend used it on her favorite shirt and the stain came right out after two applications of Windex!
Of course, if the stain is just too big, the smart thing to do is call a qualified carpet cleaning company to take care of the problem for you. Some messes deserve a household carpet professional! Stay tuned for the next article where I discuss just one of the numerous uses for a product that all moms have used at one time or another: baby powder.
