Five Ways To Clean A Dirty Carpet

Consider this… In one hour, humans shed approximately 1.5 million skin flakes. Calculate that number by the amount of time the average person stays in their home.

Kind of blows your mind, doesn’t it?

That’s just the beginning of the mystery dirt your carpet accumulates on a daily basis. It doesn’t even include pet dander, dust mites, and whatever else your shoes drag in when you walk through the front door. Vacuuming takes care of some of the dirt, but it’s always good to get your carpet professionally cleaned. Depending on the type of residence you have (i.e. home, commercial, etc), there are different methods of cleaning.

Here are the five major methods used by carpet cleaning companies.

  1. Hot Water Extraction (HWE)– it is the most common method of carpet cleaning and often referred to as ‘steam cleaning’. Using a truck-mounted machine (called a PTO), a cleaning solution is distributed on the carpet, rubbed with a grooming brush, then left to sit for a while. The hot water solution is then sucked up, creating steam as it passes through the hose of the machine and out of the carpet.
  2. Shampooing– This method works best with heavily soiled carpets.  A rotary machine works a foam solution in to the carpet using a special brush. It’s left to sit and soak up the dirt and soil in the carpet. Sometimes the solution is left to dry overnight depending on how much carpet is covered. Once the solution is dry, a vacuum is used to clean up the debris. There is a risk of saturating the carpet with too much shampoo solution, which causes shrinkage and odor.
  3. Bonnet Cleaning– sometimes used in commercial buildings. Similar to the shampoo method of using pads to distribute the product in to the carpet. In Bonnet Cleaning, the solution can either be sprayed directly on the carpet or the pad can be dampened with solution before it’s rubbed in. This method is not recommended due to the damage it can do to the fibers of the carpet. Bonnet Cleaning also doesn’t get the dirt out as much as the Shampoo method or HWE does.
  4. Green Cleaning– a safer method of cleaning carpets. Many of the cleaning solutions have toxins that are great for cleaning but not the best for humans. Green Cleaning uses a non-toxic water cleaning solution that’s applied with a high pressure spray system. A special extraction brush removes the remaining dirt.
  5. Dry Chemical– this method is used in areas of high traffic. An absorbent solution consisting of a small amount of water and dry chemicals are scattered over the carpet and rubbed on with a special brush. The drying time is significantly cut down due to the low amount of water used. The carpet must be vacuumed before and after the solution is put on. Dry Chemical method doesn’t clean as well as the Shampoo or Hot Water Extraction methods. There is also a danger of not getting all of the solution up the first time which can create a toxic air environment.

The majority of cleaning companies, including us at Immaculate Janitorial Services, use the Hot Water Extraction method, because it provides the best results and protects your carpet from damage.
